    David’s career spans 39 years in the finance and investment industry.  He worked in investment banking in Malaysia, Hong Kong and Singapore before joining a Singapore based venture capital group in 1992 where he was responsible for investments across Asia and also the United States.  In 2000, he co-founded an investment management and advisory firm and from 2001 to 2010, managed a technology focused venture capital fund owned by Ministry of Finance, Malaysia.  

    David is a graduate from the University of Manchester, England, is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales and a member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants.  He has been active in the development of the Capital Market and Venture Capital Industry in Malaysia where he has sat on various industry working groups, including that pertaining to the Malaysia’s capital market reforms announced by the Securities Commission in 2009.  He was previously Chairman the Malaysian Venture Capital & Private Equity Association.  David was one of the founder members of the Fintech Association of Malaysia where he is currently President.  He sits on the Advisory Committee on Technology for Finance established by Bank Negara Malaysia.  

    He is a senior independent director of GHL Systems Bhd, a leading payments company and an independent director of Petron Malaysia Refining and Marketing Bhd.

    Katie has a strong background in market research and consumer behaviour with experience spanning across a range of industries including Consumer Goods, Retail Property, Tourism and Financial Services. She has worked with a range of leading market research agencies using a variety of research products and solutions.

    Katie has accumulated a wealth of understanding around consumer behaviour and attitudes enabling her to provide insights and lead key client engagements to support stakeholders across APAC and the UK.

    Katie graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Food Marketing Economics, from the University of Reading, United Kingdom.

    Mr. Teng joined the Monetary Authority of Macao (AMCM) in 1991. He was appointed a member of the Board of Directors of AMCM in 1997. In 1999, he was appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors and had stayed in that position for 18 years, through and after the return of Macao to China on 20 December 1999, until his retirement in August 2017.

    He was a member of the Economic Development Committee of the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region and the Consultative Committee of the Macao Pension Fund. Besides, he was the President of the General Assembly of the Institute of Financial Services of Macao and the President of the Audit Committee of the Institute of European Studies of Macao.

    He is a member of the group initiating the establishment of the Alliance for Financial Stability with Information Technology which serves as an autonomous platform for industry professionals primarily to identify, map, evaluate and address digital challenges to the stability of financial systems by exploring and applying practical technology solutions. He also orchestrated Macao to be the first jurisdiction in the world to implement facial recognition technology in ATM cash withdrawals in 2017. 

    Mr. Teng, a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Bankers (HKIB), was born in Macao. He completed his tertiary and postgraduate studies abroad.

    Amran Hassan is the Head of Innovation at Maybank. He is responsible for raising the bar on innovation across the Maybank group. Amongst other programmes, he launched the regions first bank-run fintech accelerator program. Whilst keeping an eye on the latest developments in innovation and technology he continues to engage the eco-system to explore new ways for innovation to strive. He was formally the CIO for international operations at Maybank. Prior to Maybank, he was a Partner at Accenture, leading Technology Consulting in Malaysia and Infrastructure in South East Asia. He graduated from Imperial College, University of London.

    Mohamed Ridza is the managing partner of Mohamed Ridza & Co, a Legal 500 firm, and has been involved in many ground breaking and landmark transactions in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, Thailand, China, the Middle East and Europe.

    A Petronas scholar, he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (First Class Honors) degree from the International Islamic University Malaysia. He is also a graduate of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (London), a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (FCIS), an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (ACI Arb.), a certified adjudicator and also a panel arbitrator with the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre of Arbitration in the area of Islamic Banking & Finance.  

    He currently sits as an independent director and member of audit committee in Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad and Theta Edge Berhad. He is also the author of several publications: Law and Practice of Islamic Banking & Finance (now in its 3rd edition) published by Sweet & Maxwell, contributor to Sukuk series, Getting the Deal Through - Gas regulations, and recently his book on the Life and Law of Fintech also published by Sweet & Maxwell.

Introduction

The Business Ethics Conference, entitled “FinTech: Business Benefits and Conduct Challenges” will explore current and new trends in the FinTech ecosystem and the impact of this emerging disruptive technology on ethics and standards of professionalism in the financial services industry.

Malaysia is seeing a transformation within the financial services sector with great efforts to embrace new technologies.  Our regulators are responding actively by developing regulatory frameworks to provide a conducive landscape for an evolving FinTech ecosystem. The conference will aim to explore the ethical issues and challenges in raising professional standards in financial services within the context of this technological transformation.

    Tan Sri Dr. Munir is currently Chairman of Bank Muamalat Malaysia Berhad, of the Financial Services Professional Board, of ASEAN Business Advisory Council, Malaysia, of CIMB ASEAN Research Institute, as well as President of the ASEAN Business Club. He also sits on the board of the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia and on the Financial Services Talent Council of Bank Negara Malaysia. 

    He has an extensive experience and is well known in the Malaysian corporate world. He had been the Group Editor of the New Straits Times, first executive chairman of CIMB and founding chairman of the Malaysian Securities Commission. After stepping down from the Securities Commission, he became Independent Non-Executive Director of Telekom Malaysia Berhad, Chairman of Celcom (Malaysia) Berhad and Non-Executive Chairman of Malaysian Airline System Berhad. He was Founder President of the Kuala Lumpur Business Club, established in 2003 and is a member of the Court of Fellows of the Malaysian Institute of Management.

    Tan Sri Dr. Munir obtained a B.Sc (Econ) and Ph.D in international relations from the London School of Economic and Political Science (LSE) in 1971 and 1978. He is an Honorary Fellow of LSE and continues the long association with his alma mater as Visiting Senior Fellow at the Centre of International Affairs, Diplomacy and Strategy. Tan Sri Dr. Munir is an associate of Southeast Asia Centre (SEAC) at LSE.

    R.A. Farrokhnia, recipient of Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence, is the Founding Executive Director of “Advanced Projects and Applied Research in Fintech” Program at Columbia (fintech.gsb.columbia.edu), centered on innovation and research in financial services. He teaches at both Columbia Business and Engineering Schools and is a lecturer and board member of the Knight-Bagehot Program at Columbia Journalism School. He is also the founder and Managing Principal of a research, development, and deployment DevLab with a focus on startup ventures in FinTech, data/AI, and enterprise software.

    Being at the intersection of academia and practice, his teaching, research, and professional endeavors center on innovation and integration of industrial, operational and business analyses with practical ideation and implementation of agile, inventive and design-centric tech solutions - of special focus are financial services, technology, and transport/mobility industries. Having earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Columbia University, he has extensive global professional experience and collaborates often in numerous capacities with tier-1 multinationals. His programs and commentary have been featured in best-selling books and leading publications such as The New York Times, Barron’s, and Wired.

    Huy Nguyen Trieu is the CEO of The Disruptive Group, a business builder in innovation and finance. He has navigated between startups and large organizations, from tech CEO to MD in international banks. He is fascinated by the changes happening around us, the impact of technology on many industries, and the changing dynamics between small and large organizations.

    He also believes that in a world led by technology, we shouldn’t forget the importance of people. He is the co-founder of CFTE, the Centre for Finance, Technology and Entrepreneurship, whose objective is to help people improve their skills and find opportunities. 

    In 1999, he co-founded Ukibi, a precursor of Linkedin. After 5 intense years, he fell by coincidence into banking and was fortunate to be an intrapreneur in international banks where he helped to build high growth businesses, with his last position as Head of Insurance Structuring at Citi in London. 

    He writes Disruptive Finance, is an Associate Fellow at Oxford, a member of ESMA’s CWG for financial innovation, and a founding member of the Asian SuperCharger.

    He is a frequent keynote speaker in Europe and Asia, likes to teach and share with students and entrepreneurs, and is regularly quoted in articles on innovation and finance. 

    Huy is a graduate from MIT (US), École Polytechnique (France) and ENPC (France). He is married and a happy father of 3 daughters.

    Datuk Dr. Mohd Daud Bakar is the Founder and Executive Chairman of Amanie Group. One of its flagship companies - Amanie Advisors, is operating in few cities globally. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Shariah Advisory Council at the Central Bank of Malaysia, the Securities Commission of Malaysia, the Labuan Financial Services Authority, and the First Abu Dhabi Bank. He is also a Shariah board member of various global financial institutions, including the National Bank of Oman (Oman), Bank of London and Middle East (London), BNP Paribas (Bahrain), and Dow Jones Islamic Market Index (New York). 

    He sits as a Board Director at Sime Darby Property Berhad and a member of the PNB Investment Committee. He is also the third Chair Professor in Islamic Banking and Finance of Yayasan Tun Ismail Mohamed Ali Berdaftar PNB at Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia.

    Under his leadership, Amanie Advisors received the “Islamic Economy Knowledge Infrastructure Award” at the Global Islamic Economy Summit, Dubai 2015. Earlier, he was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the International Islamic University Malaysia. He received his first degree in Shariah from University of Kuwait in 1988 and obtained his PhD from University of St. Andrews, United Kingdom in 1993. In 2002, he completed his external Bachelor of Jurisprudence at University of Malaya.

    Jamaludin joined MAVCAP as Chief Executive Officer in 2011 from another VC owned by Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund. Previously, he has worked with a number of local and international investment banks as equity analyst for 14 years since 1991.

    Since joining MAVCAP, he launched several initiatives including raising funds from regional LPs and major corporates, SWFs and financial institutions and partnering up with strategic partners to co-manage regional funds. Under those initiatives, MAVCAP has participated and created 8 funds with combined size of USD500 million, targeted for investments in tech companies in Malaysia and in the region. MAVCAP is now a prime mover in catalysing the interactions between tech companies, entrepreneurship-related organisations, VCs and regulators in Malaysia, including Khazanah Nasional, MDEC, MaGIC, TERAJU, Securities Commission and a number of Government Ministries.

    He is also active in the VC and start-up space in Malaysia. He was the previous Chairman of the Malaysian Venture Capital Association, and currently a member of the Malaysian Venture Capital Development Council, a branch of the Securities Commission Malaysia. He is the founding member and currently the Treasurer of the Global Entrepreneurship Movement (GEM), a Malaysian-based global NGO which promotes entrepreneurship through networking and education and a current member of the ICT and Knowledge Management Panel of SME Corp. Also an Advisor of Finnext Capital, an NGO involved in promoting local fintech companies.

    Jamaludin graduated with Bachelor Degree in Business Administration (Economics) from Wichita State University, Kansas, and Master Degree in Business Law (Executive) from International Islamic University, Malaysia.

    Mr Chin Wei Min is an Executive Director at the Malaysia Securities Commission (SC). He leads the Innovation, Digital and Strategy division, overseeing the Innovation & Strategy, Digital, Analytics and Technology departments.

    SC is the first country in ASEAN to introduce a regulatory framework to facilitate ECF and P2P Financing, with six registered operators each fully live and operational. In 2016, the SC was also first in the region to announce the regulatory framework for Digital Investment Management.

    Ng Keng Hooi is the Group Chief Executive and President of AIA Group Ltd. Prior to this, he was the Regional Chief Executive responsible for the Group’s businesses operating in Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, China, as well as Group Agency and Group Product Strategy.

    Ng Keng Hooi is a director of various companies within the Group including AIA Co. and AIA International. He joined the AIA Group in October 2010. Prior to joining the Group, Ng was Group Chief Executive Officer and Director of Great Eastern Holdings Limited from December 2008. Ng worked for Prudential plc from 1989 to 2008, serving as a Managing Director of Insurance of Prudential Corporation Asia Limited from 2005 to 2008 responsible for its operations in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines. He has been a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (U.S.) since 1985.

    Tony Tan, CFA, is co-head of ethics, standards, and professional conduct at CFA Institute. He is responsible for leading the organization’s efforts in maintaining the Standards of Practice Handbook, innovating and creating ethics educational products for the investment management industry, and helping enforce the integrity of the organisation’s members professional conduct.

    Dr. Tan has worked for more than 20 years in the international financial markets, during which time he was involved in financing projects in the oil and gas industry, advised central banks and developmental financial institutions on risk management issues, and ran a global capital market trading operation.

    Prior to joining CFA Institute, Dr. Tan had an adjunct role with INSEAD, Singapore Management University, and Nanyang Technological University and taught in the areas of ethics and corporate governance. He was also an active volunteer with CFA Institute as a member of its Capital Markets Policy Council.

    Dr. Tan received a master of science in financial economics degree from the University of London and a master of research degree and a doctorate from the University of Western Australia. He is also a CFA charterholder.

    Previous roles included Chairman and CEO of Gatehouse Bank plc, a Shariah-compliant investment bank based in the City of London.

    In a career spanning more than 35 years in Merchant and Investment Banking in the City of London, the last 30 years have been entirely in "Islamic Financial Services” and dedicated to establishing the Islamic economic model as viable in the heart of the City of London and in an international context. Richard spent 4 years in Malaysia with Gatehouse Bank plc. Richard has held senior management and Board executive and non-executive positions in regulated financial services firms in the City of London since the 1980’s and authorised under successive regulatory regimes in various capacities. Richard is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI), a member of INCEIF Governing Council, and a Board Member of Financial Services Professional Board (FSPB).

    In 2010, Richard received his Order of the British Empire, an honour bestowed by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, in recognition for civic excellence and his contribution to the UK Islamic Financial Services industry.

    In 2017 Richard was accorded the Freedom of the City of London.

    Elizabeth is a freelance ethics consultant who graduated in Law from the University of Bristol. She went on to qualify as a UK solicitor and worked in legal practice in the UK presenting both civil and criminal cases in UK courts of law. Thereafter she joined the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales working in various roles including presenting professional misconduct cases against chartered accountants to disciplinary tribunals and heading up the investigation of disciplinary cases. She went on to specialise in accountancy ethics working in an advisory capacity on ethics and anti-money laundering helplines and also in technical and ethics policy. She gave practical advice to accountants and was well placed to advise on maintaining a clean disciplinary record by the correct application of ethics codes. She has gained a wealth of practical experience regarding ethical dilemmas which led to writing case studies, presenting lectures and seminars both nationally and internationally and considering various codes of conduct. Most recently she worked for the New York City based International Ethics Standards Board and was a leading staff member on its Structure Project which successfully restructured the Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants.

    He currently sits as an independent director and member of audit committee in Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad and Theta Edge Berhad. He is also the author of several publications: Law and Practice of Islamic Banking & Finance (now in its 3rd edition) published by Sweet & Maxwell, contributor to Sukuk series, Getting the Deal Through - Gas regulations, and recently his book on the Life and Law of Fintech also published by Sweet & Maxwell.
